GEOFFREY Appleton has been appointed new non-executive director of the St Helens and Knowsley Community Health (NHS) Trust.

Mr Appleton, human resources director of the Merseyside Magistrates Court Service, has lived in St Helens all his life.

After studying law at university, he joined the Magistrates Court Service as a court clerk and served the Knowsley, Liverpool and North Cheshire benches. He has worked in human resources for the past 10 years, initially as the director for the Liverpool area, before taking on the wider role when the local services were amalgamated in April 1999.

He has particular experience in developing training programmes, and is currently preparing a training pack on the skills required by magistrates' chairmen, to be launched nationally next year.

His involvement with the NHS began when he was asked to become an independent assessor in the appointment of non-executive directors for North West trusts.
