COPING with young people is the theme of two courses being offered by Partnership with Parents in Newton.

'What can a parent do?' is aimed at parents of children between five and 15 and is designed to give them an opportunity to discuss with other parents the problems they face in bringing up children.

The course, involving seven or eight sessions, starts at Newton Library on Monday, January 17 with morning sessions from 9.30 to 11.30am.

For parents of older children another course, 'Living with Teenagers', offers practical advice on listening to what they have to say, talking problems through and coping with issues of outside influences and discipline. Evening sessions start in March and details of days and times will be available nearer the time.

The range of courses being offered in 2000 includes courses on helping parents with a variety of education-linked activities including starting school, early reading skills, stories with children, early maths, developing maths and even more maths!

Venues for the courses include the library, District CE Primary, St Mary's RC Infants, Trees Community Facility and Wargrave CE Primary.

Certificates from the Merseyside Open College Network can be achieved for completion of most of the courses.

And to help parents with that other often puzzling aspect of their child's education, the use of computers, the Partnership has arranged for St Helens College's Information Technology bus (Columbus) to visit local schools and community centres so that parents, carers and even grandparents can have a taste of technology.
