BELLS heralding the new millennium had barely faded away when romantic Michael McAlister got down on one knee to propose to his sweetheart - 20 minutes into the year 2000.

The 24-year-old from Liverpool was handed a microphone when he was spotted by the DJ at Craigland's in Darwen so that other millennium party-goers could join in the special moment.

Karen Sudall, 20, of Coniston Drive, Darwen, was presented with a diamond solitaire ring after she accepted Michael's offer.

The couple met in the Cavern Club in Liverpool and have been together for two years. Karen is in her final year at Liverpool Hope University where she is studying psychology and information technology.

Karen's mum, Sandra Sudall, said: "Karen was a bit embarrassed, she had no idea what he was planning, but she said yes and both families are really pleased for them."

A date for the wedding has yet to be set but the pair hope to tie the knot in the summer of 2002.
