TEN "wanted" men have turned themselves in to police in response to anti-crime initiative Operation New Leaf.

Police say they are pleased by the results of the operation, which offers offenders a fresh start for the new millennium.

The scheme began last Friday across the Pennine Division which includes Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale.

Insp John Clucas commented: "We are very encouraged that they have responded in this way and would remind others to come forward before the special two-week operation ends on Friday, February 4."

Although not an amnesty, police say those who come forward voluntarily will be given every possible credit for their actions.

He encouraged others to start the year on a fresh footing.

The knock-on effect, he said, should be a reduction in undetected crime.

Anyone wanting to surrender is asked to attend a local police station.

Those who know they are likely to go straight to court should go to the police station before 8.30am on a weekday.
