BAD feeling existed between attack victim Ryan O'Riley and those charged with his murder it was alleged at an inquest.

Ryan, 21, died in the Royal Preston Hospital on Sunday, January 9, after being found with head injuries in Browsholme Road, Burnley, at about 1am the same day.

Det Insp David Lea said investigations had established Ryan was walking home with a friend along Browsholme Road, when three males accosted them.

They were known to Mr O'Riley to varying degrees.

There had been bad feeling towards the deceased and it was clear Mr O'Riley and his friend were threatened initially with weapons.

His friend escaped but Mr O'Riley was subjected to sustained blows, punches and kicks, causing injuries mainly to the head.

He was taken to Burnley General Hospital then transferred to the Royal Preston Hospital where he died.

Two people had been charged with murder, DI Lea told the hearing.

Inquiries were on-going with regard to a third person, a male juvenile, who was on police bail pending detailed evaluation of the evidence. Home Office and forensic pathologist Dr John Rutherford who conducted a post mortem examination said there were multiple injuries to the head, neck and abdomen.

Other injuries may have resulted in death in due course but cause of death was head injuries.

Briget Daley of Brandwood Grove, Burnley, said Ryan, her grandson, had lived with her since he was two. He was born in Burnley and worked as a labourer.

Mrs Daley said the only time he had been ill was when he received successful treatment for alcohol abuse. Adjourning the inquest sine die, East Lancashire coroner David Smith said two pathologists, acting on behalf of solicitors for the two men charged with murder, had that day carried out a further post mortem examination and a further one might be requested if the third person was charged. Mr Smith said he would resist that unless there was good reason.

He told Mrs Daley: "I know you want the funeral as soon as possible. Once everything is sorted out your grandson will be released so you can make arrangements."

Mr Smith expressed his sympathy to the family at their loss.
