A SHOPKEEPER who sold out-of-date sandwiches was fined £200 and ordered to pay £175 costs by magistrates.

The case against Amir Zaman, proprietor of the Red Rose Store, Lyndhurst Road, Burnley, was found proved in his absence at Reedley Magistrates Court yesterday.

The court was told a member of staff from Burnley Council's environmental health department visited the store on July 21 last year and found a beef and tomato sandwich with a sell-by date of July 19 in a chilled unit. There were also four other sandwiches and four packets of ox tongue on display with a sell-by date of July 20.

The council brought the prosecution against Zaman for contravening food labelling regulations.

Zaman did not appear in court and there was no mitigating evidence.
