THIEVES sneaked into the home of a ‘vulnerable’ 83-year-old and stole items worth more than £500.

Police said the offenders got into the property at Throup Place, Nelson, through an unlocked door while the pensioner was at home.

Once inside the house, they stole a selection of Royal Albert Country Roses china worth £580.

The haul included a clock, vase, trinket tray, dish and photograph frame.

A handbag containing cash was also taken.

Sgt Damian Pemberton, of Nelson Police, said: “Our concern is that this offence was committed at the home of a vulnerable elderly woman who lives alone and was in at the time.

“While these types of offences don’t happen a lot, we are reminding people to keep their doors locked and if they are in the house they should consider using a safety chain.”

Police said the theft was over Saturday and Sunday. Anyone with information should call Nelson Police on 01282 472604 or Crime-stoppers on 0800 555 111.
