Clarets defender Ian Cox is within touching distance of making up for last season's play-off heartache with Bournemouth.

Cox helped the Clarets to another thrilling win at Brentford yesterday.

Cox's Bournemouth side were pipped to sixth place on the last day by Wigan, who are at Dean Court again on the final day of this season in another potentially vital game.

But four more points in their last two fixtures will guarantee Burnley a play-off spot and two wins could take them straight up.

"There's still a glimmer of hope there. We've just got to focus on just picking up as many points as we can and if at the end of the day we do get the second spot then it's a bonus. But the most important thing is that we do consolidate the spot where we are at the moment. And if we keep churning out results like this, then we won't be too far off," said Cox, who has been a tower of strength in the Burnley defence since his £500,000 move from the south coast in February.

The Clarets' fifth win in six games took them up to third in the table as they came from behind to beat Brentford 3-2 with two goals from John Mullin and Ian Wright's fourth for the club.

"These are never going to be easy games when you've got to come here and got to win.

"But that's what we did today and the boys can give themselves a big pat on the back," Cox added. "It was a great result. Between now and the end of the season any win would naturally be deemed as a good result.

"We didn't start off too well but we came out in the second half after a few words from the manager and we showed our character really and we got our just rewards.

"People say we are winning the business.

"And now the finishing line is drawing ever closer it's important that we keep on picking up points, especially after the defeat by Gillingham when we could have gone up to near the top."
