Colne 1 Woodley Sports 2

COLNE put up a spirited performance in their final match of the season against the team who could finish as the First North Western Trains League Division Two champions.

Having secured a last-gasp win at Colne, Woodley Sports now need to beat Blackpool Mechanics this coming weekend to take the title.

It looked ominous for the home side when a defensive misunderstanding handed Woodley the lead on six minutes.

Gary Dalton was short with an attempted back pass and Peter Carter nipped in to make no mistake from close range.

Colne goalkeeper Mark Canning made some excellent saves to keep his side in the game during a fairly one-sided first half.

But it was a different story after the break with Colne starting to find their feet as an attacking force.

And their fightback was rewarded with a well-taken equaliser from substitute Mark Towers in the 80th minute.

It signalled a crazy finale with Woodley desperate for the winner and just when it seemed Colne would hold on for a point that man Carter beat the offside trap to score a winner for the visitors.

Colne have finished in the lower reaches of the table having lost 20 of their 34 league games.
