I WONDER if any thought was given by the residents, Groundwork and the New Deal group that the 'eyesore' site at Chatburn Street/Bank Top, Blackburn, which you pictured (LET, April 15), must have been a godsend to birds and butterflies and all sorts of small creatures.

With management, this oasis could, with very little input (planting wild flowers and grasses and 'gripping' the fly tippers) have been turned into something better than a charming, expensive to upkeep, but sterile formal garden which will be a constant financial drain and, in turn, support near zero wildlife.

I fear that Groundwork must 'work' because that is what it does. Stepping back is not what it is about, but in this case I feel an opportunity has been missed.

Just how much birdsong will all the hard work and expense produce and just how many small creatures have been evicted by this 'improvement?'
