THE University of Central Lancashire has got a new professor of mental health and law ethics -- William Bingley.

His appointment is a major coup for the university, as he has a high national standing in the field of mental health.

A lawyer by training, William was the legal director for MIND (National Association for Mental Health) from 1983-89.

He was then seconded to the department of health to produce the Mental Health Act Commission, the body responsible for monitoring the act throughout England and Wales.

He said: "I feel very privileged to join the university at this stage of its development.

"The faculty of health has an excellent reputation for the quality of teaching and it is researching issues in law, ethics and health and, in particular mental health, which are central to my interests."
