OBSERVING a dying industry will provide the theme next month for Rossendale's annual Whit Arts Week.

The event, taking place between Sunday May 28 and Sunday June 4, includes a number of highlights from previous years, as well as Irwell Day which will follow the theme Valley of Shoes.

The day, at Groundwork Rossendale in New Hall Hey Road, Rawtenstall, will feature a specially created performance from Rossendale's acclaimed Horse and Bamboo Theatre group, as well as the first performance by local samba band Agsaca Beat.

The group is rehearsing at Rawtenstall's Alder Grange High School and will feature later this year in the BBC Music Live Week.

The arts week will also take on board activities that have previously contributed to the annual Rossfest.

And it will for the first time make use of the Horse and Bamboo centre in Bacup Road, Waterfoot, for activities including a puppet show for children on Bank Holiday Monday, May 29, dance workshops, and a Ceilidh night on Saturday, June 3.

The week will conclude with the valley's carnival on Sunday, June 4.
