SPEED traps collar 1,000 local motorists a month.

Now, in an effort to reduce dangers and educate drivers, some offenders could find themselves having to undergo a driver improvement course instead of facing prosecution.

Safety campaign figures reveal cameras account for 75% of those being reported for speeding offences, the rest detected by radar checks.

Police and Wigan Council are currently combining to make roads safer and reduce accidents.

Watchdogs say although speeding is not the only cause of road accidents, it is one of the most common. Now the intention is to reduce or eradicate risks.

Results show driver error, including speeding, accounts for 95% of all collisions. Lapses in concentration, errors of judgement and, particularly violations, contribute to increased risks, collisions and casualties.

Improving road behaviour through driver education is now top priority so look out for high visibility policing with advice and road warnings to road users.
