A CAMPAIGN aimed at stopping cruelty to babies will be boosted by a number of fund-raising events in East Lancashire.

The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children is holding a Children's Day on Wednesday, May 3.

The aim of the day is to raise awareness of the need to protect babies from abuse and cruelty.

A spokesman for the charity said: "Of all children, babies are the most vulnerable to cruelty. In fact, a child is more likely to be killed during its first 12 months than at any other time." A number of events have been organised in East Lancashire to raise funds for the charity. All money raised will be spent locally on projects to protect youngsters.

Nationally the NSPCC provides free help and support to babies and their families, and runs a child protection helpline on 0808 800 5000. Events planned locally to mark Children's Day include a non-uniform day at Stonyhurst College and a fun evening organised by Rainbows, Beavers, Brownies, Cubs, Scouts and Guides at Fence, Burnley, on Wednesday.

On Friday, May 5 there will be a sequence dance at Horncliffe Mansions, Bury Road, Rawtenstall, at 7.30pm.

A children's fun morning will be held at Lynchgate, Sunnyhurst, Darwen, from 10am to 2pm on May 6. Admission is £2.50 per child including refreshments.

On May 7 the Pat Eakets School of Dancing is holding a danceathon at Tony's Ballroom, Town Hall Street, Blackburn.

A children's fancy dress event and family disco will be held at Poplar Working Men's Club, Accrington, on May 13.

Blackburn Ramblers will be doing a three peaks walk for the charity on May 28.
