I WRITE in reply to the letter from "A working (if not perfect) Christian" (Apr 21) whose unfair criticism targeted Father Hailes.

Father Hailes does not "sit in judgement over people that he knows nothing about". He has first-hand experience of the vandals mentioned and suffered dreadful verbal abuse, as well as vandalism at the Church of the Holy Trinity.

He has attended meetings with the elders and with the police and the meeting reported in the Bury Times of April 4 was attended by representatives of the church council. Father Hailes was unable to attend as he had a previous engagement. Even a priest cannot be in two places at once.

The person who penned that letter obviously does not know Father Hailes very well and is apparently unaware of his work in the community and for the church school.
