I READ with interest that John Prescott now wishes to decide on what basis Oxford and Cambridge universities select their students.
Perhaps he is moving towards a system whereby they are obliged to select their students from an approved list, the list of course supplied by -- well, guess who! (Party membership an advantage/requirement?)
Later this month, when I attend Manchester Royal Infirmary for my regular check-up, I don't care if the person who sees me is male or female, black or white, hetero or homosexual, rich or poor, from a mansion or a midden -- all that is irrelevant.
I care a great deal that the doctor is the best qualified available and holds the position on merit, not as a second-rate member of a quota system.
In a competitive situation there are losers and winners. if losers are given places, winners must be refused them if the number of places is finite.
