THE Guide Association has awarded Brownie Charlotte Fennell the prestigious Star of Merit in recognition of her brave battle for life.
The Rossendale nine-year-old made a miraculous recovery after being desperately ill with a brain tumour.
And, during Sunday morning mass at St James the Less, Rawtenstall, Charlotte received the rarely-awarded star from Hilary Wensley, County Commissioner for guides.
The award, presented for courage and fortitude, recognised the youngster's fighting spirit and her determination to get back to leading a normal life.
Charlotte, a pupil at St James the Less primary school, suffered from headaches 18 months ago and was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Surgeons took eight hours in April 1999 to remove it.
The St James the Less Brownie pack member continues her treatment at the oncology unit in the Christie Hospital, and has regular check-ups at Pendlebury Children's Hospital, where she was a patient on the Heywood Ward.
Charlotte's mum Catherine, dad Kelvin and brother Sean can't believe how brave she has been.
Catherine, of Constablelee, said: "I think she has been braver than I ever would have been. She just wants to get on with life now and wants to forget about what happened."
Dad Kelvin said: "Charlotte was absolutely thrilled. She is doing fine and we are very hopeful for the future."
