NICKY Daws doesn't expect to be a Burnley player when the Clarets begin life in Division One.

The pre-season build-up doesn't seem set to include Daws or Scott Green, who has agreed a new three-year deal at Wigan.

Bury midfielder Daws has long been touted as a target for Burnley boss Ternent, who used the player as an integral part of his Shakers side as they climbed into Division One and then enquired about taking him on loan in March.

However, there has been no approach to Bury for the 30-year-old who despite his wish to be back in the First Division expects to kick off the new season in Division Two at Gigg Lane.

Daws said: "That's not to say nothing will happen before the season starts, but I expect to be here at Bury for the start of the new season. "There's no hidden agenda as far as my position is concerned, though.

"Before I played in the First Division I knew I was capable of playing at that level, and I know I can play a lot better that I did last season too.

"I know I could do a more than adequate job in the First Division. I might as well jack it in now if I didn't want to play at a higher level, and I'm not prepared to do that."

Daws was wanted by Gillingham last season but rejected the move for financial and family reasons.

"Ideally I would like to play for a side locally at a higher level, but if the financial sitaution changed for the better, then I would certainly consider Gillingham," he added.

"It hurts that it's not Bury I am playing with in that division with anymore, but if Bury can't help me fulfill my ambition then obviously I will be looking to play elsewhere.

"But I have never given less than 110 per cent effort and I will continue to do that next season if I am at Bury."
