I WOULD like to offer some observations on the comments made to the local press by Hyndburn Athletics Club members Ian Coffey and Norman Mitchell on the commercial sports complex proposed for Moorhead High School in Accrington.

On what grounds does Mr Coffey think that noise would not be a problem for residents?

The other week, St Christopher's High School held a sports day on their playing fields (at least a third of a mile away). Every announcement from their small public address system could be clearly heard in our back garden. He also thinks that only athletes ('a different calibre of person') would be using the facilities, totally ignoring the fact that six five-a-side football pitches and a full-size all-weather pitch are planned.

Mr Mitchell argues on similar lines, stating that the site would only be used by athletic clubs whose members are dedicated to sport. What about the footballers and supporters?

He says the bar would be used solely by well behaved athletes. Does he not think that the supporters might also fancy a drink?

To my knowledge, none of the residents is against any plan to improve the facilities for school use. However, we strongly object to the siting of a commercial development, operating seven days a week until late at night and all year round, in the middle of a quiet residential area.
