REGARDING Mr A J H Pilkington's remarks (Letters, July 7), I suppose anyone who indulges in the barbaric practice of fox hunting can think of any excuse to continue this practice -- even to say animals have no rights.

They do have the right not to be chased halfway across the country until they are exhausted, then ripped to bits by a pack of hounds, just for the sport of a few sadists.

Mr Pilkington should remember the words of Oscar Wilde: "The unspeakable in full pursuit of the uneatable."

It is about time this barbaric pastime for the few was stopped.

If foxes should be killed for whatever reason, let it be in a humane and dignified way, not for a bloodthirsty bunch who can think up any excuse to continue this outdated pastime.

And, yes, I have lived in the country and I know some country folk abhor this practice as well.

R CUTTING (Mr), Summerville Walk, Blackburn.
