A MOTHER today admitted killing her four-month-old baby daughter whose body was found in the canal at Burnley.

Rabina Hashim, 29, of Clare Street, Burnley, denied murder, but pleaded guilty to the child's manslaughter on the grounds of diminshed responsibility.

Emma Jade Dyson's body was recovered from the Leeds and Liverpool canal on March 14 this year.

At a Preston Crown Court hearing, the case was adjourned for further medical evidence to be considered.

Hashim was remanded to Prestwich Hospital by the judge, Mr Justice Sachs. A date has not been set for a future hearing.

A massive search was mounted by police after the mother reported her baby and pram missing from outside toilets in Burnley town centre.

The baby's body was recovered by police from the Leeds and Liverpool canal four hours later.The police and helicopter search switched to the canal near to Burnley Barracks after a caller reported seeing a pram on the towpath.

It was near there, only a little more than 100 yards from the family home in Clare Street, that Emma's body was recovered.

Burnley MP Peter Pike called for an investigation into baby Emma's death after it was revealed that the family was "known" to the social services and described the incident as a tragedy.
