RESIDENTS on a Morecambe Street are celebrating after their road was resurfaced, ending 40 years of neglect.

Woodhill Avenue finally has a new Tarmac surface after being dogged with potholes, weeds and loose kerbs.

One delighted resident, Tracey Leeming, said the roads had been atrocious since she moved there five years ago.

"It's a lot better now," she added: "There are no dips or potholes in the road, and it is safer for the kids."

The resurfacing follows lobbying by Harbour ward councillors, David Kerr and Nick Westwell.

Cllr Westwell said: "It was one of the issues we said we would look into at the election last year.

"It may look bland and boring, but for the people who live here it means a lot, because it makes their lives more enjoyable."

Cllr Kerr made a video of the road's condition to present to the county council.

"This money took some getting," he added: "All the kerbing stones were out, it was full of weeds, there were no road markings and a lamppost was hanging out.

"Luckily, money came in from the county council and this road was selected ahead of all the other roads in the are.

"We were told that this money comes around once every hundred years.

"We're hoping that next time it won't take so long."

The pair now hope money can be found to complete similar work on other nearby roads.
