THE curiosity of a local history fan has been raised by the two distinct spellings which grace a twisting country road leading from Billinge to St Helens.
At one end, just off the villages Main Street, the street sign says Carmill Road, but as it winds its way into the Moss Bank section it suddenly switches to Carr Mill Road.
Now, an observant follower of this nostalgia page, calling himself Owd Casey, asks: "Which one is correct? The accepted version (shared by the district it leads to) is Carr Mill.
"But is Carmill the original historic name; or is it just a case of Billingers not being able to spell properly?"
OUCH!
