I WAS disappointed to read in your newspaper that even with the arrival of the new Millennium and the hope of a more tolerant, fair and just society, unemployed people may be asked to work an "assessment" prior to employment and receive no pay for a possible eight hours work.

Of course I appreciate and understand employers have to be sure potential recruits are suitable both physically and mentally and are able to carry out their work in a safe and productive manner.

Nevertheless, I feel it is unfair and unjust in today's society to expect a person to work an assessment under working conditions for no pay and no guarantee of employment afterwards.

Many employers are aware of the need for a positive recruitment and selection procedure which is fair and reasonable for both employer and employee. I hope other employers will follow the example of these forward-thinking companies.

The GMB Union has forever been at the forefront of the struggle to secure the best working conditions and pay for its members and will continue to do so to the best of its ability.

Our movement is based on challenging injustice in the workplace and ensuring that working people are afforded the respect and dignity they are most certainly entitled to at work.

If any person wishes to join our union and help secure more rights for workers in all industries, please call in at our Leigh office for an application form.
