LITTER louts who rubbish the streets of Leyland are to be targeted in a unique 'direct action' scheme to clean up the town.

After receiving dozens of complaints from residents concerned about the amount of litter in the town, county councillor Michelle Edwin, has organised teams from four local high schools to combat the louts.

Youngsters from Balshaws, St Mary's, Wellfield and Worden high schools will be in the town today (Thursday, July 13) to pick up litter.

As well as meeting the 'clean up Leyland' challenge, they all will be competing for a trophy and party vouchers donated by McDonald's restaurant who, Coun Edwin says, are more than happy to be associated with this worthwhile project.

Others prizes have been donated by Antonello's Pizza, in Hough Lane, Leyland, and the Tidy Britain Group. Coun Edwin explained: "Young people are constantly being blamed for dropping litter, when in fact it is only a careless few who give the others a bad name.

"I organised this event to give the young people the chance to show everyone that they care about their environment and want to help."

The event is supported by South Ribble Borough Council who are providing health and safety equipment as well as specialist help from Environmental Services.

Coun Edwin added: "I am grateful to all the sponsors and the borough council for all their help and support.

"The issue of litter was high on residents' agenda at the last election, so I'm glad this issue is to be tackled.

"It's great to see kids getting involved with schemes such as these. Hopefully it will promote a sense of community spirit."
