LANCASHIRE Ambulance Service is one of the top performers in the country, according to official Department of Health figures.

The service reached 69 per cent of life-threatening calls within eight minutes and 97 per cent of all other emergencies within 19 minutes.

This level of performance makes Lancashire the best in the North West and one of the top three services nationally.

David Hill, chief executive of Lancashire Ambulance Service, welcomed the figures and said: "They make reassuring reading for the people of Lancashire, but despite them we will not relax our efforts to secure further improvements."

And Anthony Marsh, director of accident and emergency operations, said: "I cannot praise my staff too highly for their commitment and dedication."
