ANGRY residents have formed an action committee to oppose plans to build a McDonald's Drive-Thru at Windle Island.

Neighbours claim that proposals by the fast-food giant for an 85-seater restaurant on the Refil service station site would be dangerous and out of character for the area.

McDonald's proposals include demolition of existing buildings, plus erection of a free-standing restaurant with parking, landscaping and access amenities. It is understood that permission has already been granted for a petrol station, incorporating a mini-market and car wash, at the busy junction of the East Lancashire Road and Rainford Road.

At a public meeting at the Gerard Arms Hotel, attended by more than 70 local residents, an action committee was formed and householders were canvassed by leaflet.

Windle Parish Council has also thrown its weight behind the fight and residents are being urged to voice their objections to the planning authority. Among issues raised by opponents to the scheme are potential traffic problems at what is an accident 'blackspot'; its proximity to St Helens cemetery and crematorium; litter; smells; rat infestation; vandalism; devaluation of homes; and attraction of school children to a fast-food outlet.

Parish councillor Wally Ashcroft, who was also elected to St Helens Borough Council in May, is among the leading lights of the campaign. He told the Star: "It doesn't take much imagination to realise the danger created by pupils from Rainford and the surrounding districts fancying a 'Big Mac' at the log-jammed junction. Building a McDonald's is also out of character with the Windle area, and we shall fight this planning application tooth-and-nail.
