SATURDAY, July 22, is a date for your diary as Rainford's Millennium Procession and Carnival Field Day is sure to be a day to remember.

The carnival will start with a procession through the village starting at noon from Lord's Fold (off Ormskirk Road) and will proceed via Ormskirk Road, Church Road, Rookery Lane and Higher Lane to Rainford High School playing fields, arriving at about 1.30 pm.

There will be lots of attractions on the field, including a hot-air balloon, a parachute display, dog display, Morris dancers, line dancers etc. The children are sure to be kept entertained by the pony rides, bouncy castles, face painting, Bubbles the clown, children's fun fair and much much more.

Also on offer are traditional Field Day activities such as a penalty shoot out, tombolas, archery, a coconut shy, roll a penny, Bat the Rat, Wheel of Fortune and fire engines.

The carnival is not just a day for the kids, there will be plenty of things for mums and dads to look at, with vintage car displays, craft tents, cottage industries, clay pigeon shooting, and a Police Display Team to name but a few. A five-a-side football competition will be ongoing throughout the day.

Two local bands will provide musical entertainment. With fast food outlets, ice-cream vans and a tea tent, there will be plenty of refreshments on hand. Any medical requirements will be attended to by the skilled St John Ambulance people who will be present on the day. Tony Brown, chairman of the Millennium Committee which is organising this event, said: "This is going to be a great day out for everyone, but especially for the local people of Rainford. We want everyone to come along and enjoy themselves at a village event that will be remembered long after it is over."

So make a note of the date in your diaries, pray for good weather and bring the family to the Rainford Millennium Procession and Carnival Field Day, from mid-day on Saturday, July 22, to enjoy a truly great day out!

Please note that as from 11.15 am on the day the roads will be closed along the processional route in stages starting from Lord's Fold. It is anticipated that the disruption should be no longer than 30 minutes at each phase.

Should you have any unwanted gifts or bottles suitable for tombola stalls, please contact David Grice on 884633 or Iris Brown on 884709 (am) or 882921 (pm) who will arrange collection. Funds raised will be donated to four local charities.
