RAINFORD's clinical four-wicket victory over Croston on Saturday consolidated their place at the top of the Southport and District League.

On a breezy, overcast day, Croston elected to bat against the accurate opening pair of Harrison and Calland.

And, with Aussie Andy Robinson bowling 12 overs for 12 runs Croston were always in trouble.

The innings' destroyer, however, came in the shape of Ian Donnelly, who tore through the Croston middle order to finish with 6-31 as the visitors were reduced to 113 all out.

After tea Rainford set about their task in a workmanlike way. Robinson made a typically brisk 45, while Matt Campbell played the anchor role with 30 as Rainford coasted home.

Meanwhile, the second team's game was ruined by the weather.

Andrew Haygarth claimed two early wickets as Croston were reduced to 26-3. They recovered to reach 164-8 as Kith Haskayne took 4-56-25 and John Williams junior 2-40.

But heavy rain after tea brought proceedings to a premature end.
