A LOCAL artist is set to have his work exhibited in the Great British Art Show at the G-Mex Centre in Manchester.

Electrician James Lyon, from Lowther Drive, Rainhill, is showing six watercolour paintings and is one of more than 150 artists featured in the annual event.

The 58-year-old father-of-one, a member of St Luke's Art Fellowship, Eccleston, told the Star: "I took up watercolours about 12 months ago and I joined St Luke's shortly afterwards.

"I have always liked painting birds but I also specialise in landscapes. I have shown my work in exhibitions before but certainly nothing on this scale and I am hoping to sell a couple of pieces as well."

The exhibition will be officially opened to the public by Coronation Street actress Julie Hesmondhalgh, who plays Hayley Cropper, at 11am on Saturday, August 5 and runs until Sunday, August 13.
