BLACKBURN Rovers and Burnley have held the first in a series of pro-active meetings in a bid to ensure the December derby game passes off peacefully.

Officials from both clubs met last week to discuss provisional plans with police about how to avoid the threat of trouble.

There has been some concern voiced about the timing of the game.

Sky wanted the game on a Friday or Sunday but police didn't want a Friday night kick-off.

So, with Manchester United versus Liverpool also scheduled for Sunday, December 17, the Turf Moor game was fixed for a 4pm kick-off. Both clubs are keen to do everything possible to keep it trouble-free and Rovers chief executive John Williams was pleased with the outcome of the first meeting.

"We do realise this game is a bit special and we are preparing thoroughly as a result," said Williams.

"There will be follow up meetings and an on-going dialogue between both clubs aimed at reassuring fans in the build up to the game.

"But the message we want to get over to supporters is 'Come along and support your team but do it in a responsible way."

Burnley chief executive Andrew Watson has also thrown his full weight behind the plans, adding: "We met last week to talk about arrangements for the match in general.

"It's the first of a series of meetings planned because both clubs want to make sure everything runs smoothly on the day.

"We are working together and doing everything possible to make sure it's a trouble-free game and an enjoyable derby match for both sets of supporters played in an excellent atmosphere."
