N ANAYATS (Letters, September 5) writes that there was no noise from the mela in Witton Park, Blackburn, on August 20. In a neutral sense, noise is defined as a sound of any kind, and the level of sound from Witton Park on that day was the highest I have ever heard from any event there over the last 20 years.
I understand that several complaints were made during the event and am surprised that environmental health officers were not on hand to measure the sound level and its footprint, thus stopping any argument about what the sound consisted of, where it could be heard and whether the wind was responsible.
There are limits as to the sound levels that people are subjected too, whether by choice or not.
Perhaps it might be to the advantage of everyone if future events which could conceivably result in high sound levels are planned for it to be arranged that officers would be present to monitor the sound levels and advise the organising officials accordingly.
