A RIBBLE Valley councillor has accused MP Nigel Evans of "doing his damndest" to stop the development of the Grand Cinema in Clitheroe.

Coun Frank Dyson, told a full council meeting, that by trying to gain listed building status for the York Street cinema complex, Mr Evans was hampering plans by the Trinity Community Partnership to transform the building into a multi-million pound community arts centre.

And he added that Mr Evans had suggested finding a new site for the project.

"Trinity's plans have been stopped in their tracks. His latest suggestion would destroy our market and the arts centre would be built on the car park near the market stalls," he said.

Chairman of the community committee Coun Harry Backhouse disagreed: "I don't think he did it to hamper Trinity or to ruin the development.

"This council is supporting Trinity and has put aside a pot load of cash for them."
