A NEW project which aims to promote health and welfare of young children and their families was given a kick start when four help organisations received cheques totalling nearly £400,000.

The presentation by the Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen Jack Bury at Darwen Gala signalled the launch of a major development phase for the Sure Start for Sudell and Central Darwen.

Cheques went to Rev Terry Ensor on behalf of Relate, Melita Mather for Top Start youth sport initiative, Julie Thornborough for Barnados, and Ken Johnstone and Sheila Maw for Communicare.

Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council were awarded with £2.6million after being chosen as a 'trailblazer' authority for Sure Start.

The grant will be used to help give youngsters a better start in life including building a one stop family services shop in Lord Street. It will open in late summer 2001.
