PHIL Gray's chances of a switch from Burnley to Grimsby Town could be scuppered by Grimsby's move to bring former Mariners favourite Clive Mendonca back to Blundell Park.

Town boss Lennie Lawrence has also recruited Danish striker David Neilsen on loan from FC Copenhagen with a view to a permanent move as he looks for the firepower to keep Grimsby in Division One.

Lawrence is planning to watch Mendonca in action for Charlton's reserve side next week and could then make a move for the striker, who scored 60 goals in 166 League appearances for Grimsby before moving to Charlton for £700,000 in May, 1997.

And if that deal goes ahead it could put a move for Clarets striker Gray, who played under Lawrence at Luton Town, on the backburner.

Lawrence is keen on Gray, who made a seven-minute appearance as a substitute in Northern Ireland's 1-0 defeat by Iceland last night, but looks set to go for Mendonca first if the former Sheffield United and Rotherham front man measures up.
