TIGHTER controls on airguns and other firearms have been welcomed by MP David Chaytor.
He says that new Government proposals will do much to safeguard public safety and tackle crime.
Mr Chaytor had called for action in August following a spate of airgun incidents in Bury which led to injuries.
The measures include:
a ban on unsupervised use of firearms by youngsters under 16
an increase from 17 to 18 in the minimum age for owning a lethal gun
a clear standard for measuring how lethal airguns are
better education on airgun safety and tougher enforcement of existing laws.
Future plans may include allowing airguns to be sold only through registered firearms dealers, and a ban on selling imitation guns to under-18s.
The Bury North MP said: "I hope that these proposals will become law soon and we will be spared further tragic accidents of which we've already seen far too many."
