GRUMPY children will be taught how to play with rubbish in Bury!

The Greater Manchester Play Resource Unit, otherwise known as GRUMPY, was launched in the borough recently.

More than 60 adults with childcare connections and about a dozen children went to the event at the Castle Leisure Centre to find out more about the new unit where children will be using waste and recycled goods creatively.

According to Karen Blackledge, a childcare development worker, GRUMPY has a dual purpose.

"It provides training for providers in child care and will run workshops which anybody can attend, where children will be taught how to make creative things out of recycled goods. The recycled materials will mostly come from industry.

"The purpose of the launch day was to make people connected with child care aware of GRUMPY."

GRUMPY will be based in Hurst Street and to attend people must become members, paying a £2 membership fee.

"At the moment GRUMPY is only open for restricted hours," added Karen. "People can just turn up on the day and join in. Although it is on trial, we do envisage that it will eventually move to bigger premises."

GRUMPY will open every Tuesday between 1 and 7 pm at its headquarters on Hurst Street, Bury.
