RADCLIFFE'S popular annual bonfire night certainly went with a bang as 1,000 revellers watched the night sky being lit up.

Around £2,000 of fireworks went up in smoke during a colourful and spectacular display at Saturday night's (Oct 7) event.

Again, Close Park was the venue for the bonfire night which was organised by Radcliffe Round Table.

Bury's mayor and mayoress, Councillor and Mrs Bill Johnson, officially lit the bonfire.

Later, spectators watched in awe as scores of fireworks were let off by two professionals from the Pyro 2000 company.

One of the youngest visitors was two-year-old Ellie Wilson from Radcliffe, pictured with her glow sticks against the backdrop of the raging bonfire.

Despite the heavy rain, Round Table officials were delighted that up to 1,000 mums, dads and children turned out for the event.

Table chairman, Mr Nicholas Bebb said: "We made a profit of £1,500, around £500 more than last year.

"Unfortunately, the weather on the day and the night itself was atrocious. Given that, we are very grateful for the support of local people.

"The fireworks display was extremely well-run and excellent. I'm very pleased."

He added: "I would like to thank the people of Radcliffe for their support and we will be using the money raised to further community projects within the town."
