TORRENTIAL rain failed to dampen the spirits of those attending a family fun day at Walton-le-Dale Youth and Community Centre, in Brindle Road, near Leyland, this weekend.

As well as art and craft activities, visitors enjoyed a host of fun games, raffles, face painting, a tombola and a beat the buzzer competition.

The magical day was organised by staff at Runshaw College, Leyland, in partnership with Lancashire Youth and Community Service, to coincide with National Family Learning Weekend.

The main aim was to raise awareness of family learning opportunities and to encourage parents to enjoy studying with their children.

Several public, voluntary and private agencies were involved in the day including South Ribble Borough Council, health officials and local parents and toddler groups.

And children's librarian, Sue Smith, from Lancashire Libraries kept lots of little bookworms entertained with stories from their favourite books.

Claire Cusworth, from Runshaw College, said: "Some people find the idea of going to college intimidating.

"We feel that people learn best when they are comfortable. By making these first steps into or back to learning, we make it easier for people to develop their skills and to help their own children learn."
