THE father of a Leyland boy, who died 30 years ago, is calling on motorists to think before they park on narrow streets in the town.

James Ross, of Haig Avenue, Leyland, is fuming with parents who park their cars "inconsiderately" while taking their children to and from school.

He claims the 'school rush' motorists block the road while taking their children to St Mary's RC Primary School and Northbrook Primary School nearby.

James's plea comes in the week of what would have been his dead son's birthday. Alexander was three years old when he was knocked down and killed in an accident in Haig Avenue.

But the caring dad says he is determined to prevent another child being killed in this way. He said: "My son was knocked down by a driver reversing out of St Mary's School. He had no chance and died instantly.

"That's when I started this campaign to get something done." James has contacted St Mary's and the council, but he is worried because plans have been submitted to extend the school.

Councillor Anne Brown who represents the area, said: "Some years ago road humps were laid in Haig Avenue. The options remaining are very difficult and what could be done is limited."

Headteacher at St Mary's RC Primary School, Eileen McNamara, added: "We are aware that there is a problem and we do ask parents to park appropriately. The school's extension building will create two new classrooms for children already at the school and is not a measure to increase children intake."

Chris Rogerson, headteacher at Northbrook County Primary, said: "The problem has been alleviated somewhat now that we have our own car park for parents to use. But it is a problem that is not unique to this area."
