THE winners of Lancaster LitFest's annual Poetry Competition have been announced.

This year's judge U A Fanthorpe selected a total of thirty pieces by 25 poets from across the British Isles which will now be published in an anthology to be launched at the festival.

The winners include established poets and many new names plus two local winners, Jane Routh and Alison Easton.

Subject matter and tone vary greatly but the quality of the writing is consistently high.

The judge, U A Fanthorpe, said: "It was extremely hard to disentangle that thirty from all the other clamouring for a place. I particularly like Lancaster's way of awarding not a first, second and third but the distinction in an anthology which over the years has earned the respect of serious poets everywhere. The official launch will take place at 2pm on October 21 at the Gregson Centre.

If you missed out this year don't worry - they are now accepting entries for 2001. Call the LitFest on 62166.
