I SEE the 'Art or Bunk' debate is alive and well in Preston (Citizen, October 5).

I agree with the artists that art should be out in public places as well as in galleries, after all we already have public art in the form of sculpture, monuments and architecture and there are those who see some advertising as art.

One of your interviewees appears to confuse art with painting and decorating and another posed the question "what is it supposed to represent?"

I feel that interpretation of these pieces is as much up to the viewer as the artist -- you can make of it what you will and the meaning is not set.

Mind you, this debunking of art is not new, many were horrified at seeing an impressionist painting at the Harris at the beginning of the 20th century.

It is my opinion that if a work, be it contemporary or otherwise, is causing debate and controversy the artists are doing their job.

I look forward to viewing more art on the streets of Preston.
