FOR the first time to my knowledge the possibility of the old church of All Saints being demolished has been publicly voiced (Bury Times, Oct 3).

When redundancy became inevitable, PASE (Preserve All Saints, Elton) submitted proposals for the church building which, at the time, seemed acceptable to the PCC.

These were based on a multi-purpose use of the building, such as a heritage centre for Bury; a training centre for trade skills with periodic displays and exhibitions; a concert hall and music school in which the existing fine organ could play a part; use as a playhouse for the promotion of literary and drama events; and a rehabilitation centre and counselling agency offering specialist help to those in need of social or spiritual re-adjustment. We understand that use as a diocesan centre of retreat for clergy and laity alike would not be countenanced by the Diocese.

These proposals were discussed some months ago with the council planning officer, who listened sympathetically. They were also transmitted to the Manchester Diocese planning committee. No reply was received.

It is encouraging to read that some Bury councillors are deeply concerned with the future of this historic listed building, and with the importance of its preservation. It has, after all, played an important part in the history of our town, which in the past has lost so much of its heritage.

But it is ironic that while so many local people are anxious to preserve All Saints, the administrators of the ecclesiastic parish place no priority on the future of this lovely building. We are told that the Church consists of people, not of buildings. It is sad that so little consideration is given to the feelings of the many people who mourn the passing of a dearly loved church.

JOHN H. HOPE,

on behalf of PASE.
