TALK about bad losers. Burnley's last-gasp win at Tranmere last Friday night was all too much for Rovers' club video commentator Paul Rice. His hopes were high when Jason Koumas smacked home a sumptuous volley to get Tranmere back in the game at 2-1. "Pick that out pal," Rice gleefully exlaimed. But when Payton pounced for the winner in injury-time, his mood changed dramatically. "I don't believe this. It's absolutely horrendous for Tranmere. They've nicked it off us. They should be prosecuted for thieving," he wailed.

IT appears even Bury stalwart Nicky Daws is getting fed up of the constant speculation linking him with a move to Burnley. After scoring the Shakers' clincher against Bristol Rovers last weekend, Daws laughed off the latest outbreak of transfer talk: "I haven't heard that one before ! They've got about 25 midfielders. What on earth do they want me for?"

STOCKPORT defender Mike Flynn admitted that Paul Robinson would be something of a surprise package for him at Turf Moor this afternoon. But the County skipper was expecting Burnley's on-loan striker to come out firing on all cylinders. "He had a bit of a run in the Newcastle first team and big things were expected of him. Suddenly he found himself a bit down the pecking order so he might have a point to prove to Newcastle and Wimbledon," said Flynn.

Glory book

A NEW book on the Clarets has hit the shelves in the shape of 'Heroes of Winter -- Burnley. The Glory Years Remembered.' The book, written by Mike Prestage, reflects largely on Burnley's successes of the late fifties and sixties but kicks off just after the Second World War and finishes with a chapter looking to the future based on last season's promotion triumph. There is also a chapter devoted to Jimmy McIlroy and many of the key players of the time bring their recollections to what looks an impressive work decorated by a handful of excellent pictures.

The book, part of a series of football histories from Breedon Books, costs £12.99.

Clarets carrot
