WELSH Under 21 international James Thomas today held the key to Graeme Souness's hopes of landing Sheffield United hot-shot Marcus Bent.

Rovers last night lodged an official bid in the region of £2.1 million for the 22-year-old striker.

But Blades boss Neil Warnock wants Thomas on loan until the end of the season as part of the deal.

And, unless the 21-year-old agrees to the switch, the whole move could be scrapped.

"We are prepared to let Marcus Bent go to Blackburn but only as long as James Thomas is part of the deal and he is ready to play on Saturday," said Warnock today.

"If not, we'll consign it to the dustbin and consider an offer from another club because they are also offering another player I am interested in."

United called a meeting at Bramall Lane this morning to officially discuss Rovers' bid.

And that looks like being accepted as long as Thomas agrees to become the makeweight.

Rovers boss Graeme Souness has been chasing Bent for a while but he was initially scared off by a £3 million pricetag.

However, United have since lowered their sights and decided to cash in on a player who cost just £300,000 from Port Vale last season.

With Nathan Blake still a month away from a first team return, Souness is keen to bolster his striking resources ahead of a busy Christmas programme. But, if the deal goes through, then Bent faces a fight for a regular place with Mark Hughes, Matt Jansen and Egil Ostenstad already battling for two places upfront.

Meanwhile, Ewood chief executive John Williams has revealed Southampton have made contact about a possible move for Jason McAteer.

Saints boss Glenn Hoddle wants to take the Republic of Ireland international to the Dell.

And the former Liverpool man could be made available if the price was right.

"We've had an informal discussion with them but that was covering various things," said Williams.

Rovers are bidding to bolster the crowd for Saturday's home clash with Gillingham by offering a special package for the club's female supporters.

The club have christened the occasion "Ladies Day" and have unveiled plans to tempt the wives and girlfriends of supporters to Ewood Park.

For £49.99, female fans can expect a buffet meal and coffee in the club's Millennium Lounge, a complimentary match programme and bar facilities.

Those taking up the offer will also be given the opportunity to meet their favourite Rovers players after the game.
