JOBS: A delegation of 60 union officials, shop stewards, trades council representatives and jobless workers from Bury were due to travel to London to join the nationwide protest against unemployment. The local contingent would be among thousands who would converge on the House of Commons after making the journey by road, rail and even air to demand the Government takes positive measures to tackle Britain's unemployment problem.

LICENCE: The Roach Conservative Club in Rochdale Road, Bury, was granted an application for registration, six months after losing its licence.

When 26 people were fined a total of £1,000 in May, following a prosecution for after-hours drinking, Bury magistrates decided the premises should not be used as a registered club for three months. In that time the the club amended some of its rules and complied with requirements set out by the fire service and the local council. FOUNTAIN: Passers-by were ankle-deep in water and traffic slowed to a halt when a main broke and water gushed 70ft into the air at Bury Bridge. For almost half-and-hour the surging jet spread the road and police directed traffic around it.

ACID: A child was taken to hospital after drinking acid from a car battery. Anthony Frost ( 2), of Horbury Drive, Elton, was taken to Bury General Hospital and was discharged after treatment.

CHURCH: Work was due to begin on the construction of a sister church and community centre at Holcombe Brook, as an extension of Holcombe Parish Church. The building, Canon Lewis Hall, would cost in the region of £18,000.

RITA: Barbara Knox, who plays Rita in Coronation Street , was the special guest at the annual Christmas fair of the Bury and Bolton Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus.
