NEW laws are needed to crack down on rogue traders who rip-off customers, says MP David Chaytor.
He is demanding that a new Consumer Bill be included in the forthcoming Queen's Speech and introduced during the next Parliamentary session.
"Every year thousands of people fall victim to unfair trading practices like oppressive selling tactics, exorbitant prices and shoddy workmanship," said the Bury North MP.
"It's now time to introduce tougher laws to protect the public against the rogue traders who can make their life such a misery."
Mr Chaytor said that trading standards officers must be given greater powers, and the courts allowed to ban persistent offenders from trading.
"This will send out a strong message to rogue traders that their days are numbered," he said. "We also need a new framework to ensure that unfair traders provide proper compensation to their victims."
