ATHERTON councillors beat as they sweeped as they cleaned! The Beat It Team were in town giving a special 2001 spruce-up to the area after a request by local councillors Sue Loudon and Reg Holmes. The grot spot marvels from Wigan MBC engineers' department worked the same magic on Mealhouse Lane, the market place, town centre and car parks as they had previously done on footpaths around Howe Bridge.
Cllr Loudon said: "During Christmas we looked around our area and felt the town centre needed a bit of special attention. The Beat It Team has worked well and many areas are looking much better."
