STUCK for something to do on the May Day Bank Holiday? Then look no further than the major gala event being jointly staged by the recently-formed Residents Association of Moss Bank and Carr Mill and the Friends of Clinkham Wood .

Roy Litherland, association chairman, reports that there's been fabulous response to their plea for competition prizes. Among them, the offer of a pleasure trip for two in a private light aircraft over Moss Bank or the local district of the winner's choice.

It will be a 'something for everyone' occasion, ranging from sports events and dance troupe demonstrations to a fairground, quad bikes, brass band, OAP stand, and demonstrations by police dog and birds of prey handlers and fly-fishing experts.

There'll also be craft attractions, including basket weaving and woodwork, a visit from Saints players, face painting and bouncy castles for the kiddies, refreshment stalls and five-a-side soccer.

For the strong in arm, there's a tug o' war competition and a wellie chucking challenge. In fact, so many May 7th attractions at the Windermere fields that it would take up all the room on this page to list 'em all.

There's also an opportunity to pick up a bargain or two at the car boot sale, staged from 10am on the Moss Bank village green There are still a number of £5 pitches available and anyone interested could ring St Helens 601419, which, when not manned, has a 24-hour answer-phone facility.

It's not the first community event to be staged by the fledgling Residents and Friends group -- but certainly their most ambitious.

It is intended to trigger off a number of year-long events, totally focussed upon promoting a good neighbour policy and helping to eliminate youth trouble.

Both groups have taken giant steps in lifting the profile of what was once a major problem area, classed as an after-dusk 'no go area' for public transport.

It's to the credit of the two voluntary groups that they have succeeded, in very short time, in providing the youth of the area with something interesting and meaningful to do, such as joining in healthy recreation and cleaning up the Clinkham Wood -- once a dumping ground, but now being restored to its picturesque best.

SO get down there on May Day and give a boost to all that good work.
