TWO LOCAL youngsters took their first steps towards a challenging career in journalism last week when they spent three days on the Journalism Live! careers award scheme, as part of Sky's 'Reach For The Sky Campaign.'

Victoria Grundy and Kariann Lowton from Rainhill High School joined 200 other aspiring journalists from around the UK on the three-day event, which took place at the London College of Printing's School of Media.

They were given a fantastic 'hands-on' insight into the world of print and broadcast journalism, experienced different working roles and found out about jobs within journalism.

They also met professionals from the industry and the head of Sky News, Nick Pollard, who said: "The award schemes are a fantastic way to motivate kids and to introduce them to print and broadcast journalism. I feel privileged to be able to encourage and inspire the next generation of young journalists."

The Journalism Live! award, is one of four award schemes being run as part of the 'Reach For The Sky' programme and was chosen by Victoria and Kariann from a selection of entertainment, sport and technology. The aim of the awards is to offer advice, support and careers guidance to pre-GCSE teenagers.

And Ben Stimson, head of corporate affairs at BSkyB said: "We know that one of the biggest worries that pre-GCSE teenagers have is choosing a career, and that this is also a concern of their parents. 'Reach For The Sky' was developed to inspire them about their future and help them benefit from our expertise and passion."
